The long-awaited contract talks between star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants are going to start relatively soon.

After months of waiting to see how Beckham recovered from a broken left ankle and how the 25-year-old mended his ways Adidas Leon Draisaitl Jersey , Giants co-owner John Mara said Thursday the talks with player and his representatives will take place sooner rather than later.

"I think this was the time that we always had in mind," Mara said.

"But I think Odell personally is moving in the right direction. He has come in here with a good attitude. Showed up yesterday with a smile on his face. He's worked hard. I think he's ready to go. He's ready for a great season."

The 25-year-old Beckham is entering the fifth and final season of his rookie contract. He is to earn $8.5 million this season, but the three-time Pro Bowler whose career has been tarnished by off-the- field issues, wants to be among the NFL's highest-paid players, certainly the highest-paid receiver.

Mara refused to say how much the Giants were willing to pay, but noted the franchise wants Beckham to stay for a long time.

Beckham, who was injured in early October and missed the rest of the season, helped himself in the offseason by working hard. He attended about half of the voluntary organized team activities and reported to camp on time Wednesday.

Beckham took part in about 50 percent of the plays in Thursday's workout and later ran sprints on a back field. He looked good.

Beckham has been the catalyst of the Giants' offense since being drafted in the first round in 2014. In 47 NFL games, the former LSU product has 313 catches for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns.

Fellow receiver Sterling Shepard said Thursday that Beckham seems even more explosive this season.

"He wants to show everyone he still has it," Shepard said.

In a wide-ranging interview with the media on the first day of practice, Mara said he hopes the league and the players union will be able to agree on a national anthem policy. He said the team would wait to see what happened in meetings which he said will take place soon.

"Hopefully we can find a resolution that everyone is open to," Mara said.

Mara also said he believes 37-year-old quarterback Eli Manning still had several good years ahead of him.

The co-owner also is excited by the unlimited physical skills of running back Saquon Barkley. He is concerned about the hype being thrust on the second overall pick in the draft.

"I think he is capable of living up to it," Mara said. "I think he is mature beyond his years."

Mara says he still has not recovered from last year's 3-13 season that led to the firing of coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese in early December.

However, he admits there is a new feeling in the building with the changes made by new coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Dave Gettleman.

Gettleman Marc-Andre Fleury Jersey , who was diagnosed with lymphoma in late spring, is doing well and is currently in remission, Mara said.

Gettleman was in the office Wednesday and spoke to the team.

"I don't think I have ever been around a more upbeat person in my life, particularly going through what he has been going through," Mara said. "He is optimistic about his recovery and his ability to work this year."

The Green Bay Packers' defense needs someone to step up behind Clay Matthews and Nick Perry at outside linebacker.

Reggie Gilbert is starting to make his move. After a strong showing during the team's preseason-opening victory over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night, Gilbert got extensive work with the starting defense in practice Sunday, the first time the team was back on the field.

Gilbert lined up at outside linebacker in the base defense opposite Matthews, as Perry remains on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury. Until Sunday, Kyler Fackrell had gotten nearly all of those first-team snaps with Matthews in Perry's place.

Gilbert, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona in 2016, spent most of the past two years on the Packers' practice squad before a call-up to the 53-man roster for the final two games last year.

Facing Minnesota and Detroit, Gilbert registered four quarterback pressures and three quarterback hits on the Vikings' Case Keenum and earned his first NFL sack against the Lions' Matthew Stafford.

"I feel like I've come a long way since I got here and am definitely improving. I feel like I'm improving with every session we get as far as in practice or every year in every game," said Gilbert, who was a hand-in-the-dirt defensive end in college and had to learn to be a standup outside linebacker in the Packers' 3-4 scheme. "I feel like I'm learning new things. Clay, Nick and everybody Marshall Newhouse Jersey , they're all helping bring us along."

Despite unproven depth behind Matthews and Perry 鈥?and the two veterans' history of injuries 鈥?the Packers eschewed signing any edge rushers in free agency and didn't spend any of their high draft picks on the position, either. The only draft choice at outside linebacker was seventh-rounder Kendall Donnerson from Southeast Missouri State.

During the offseason, Packers coach Mike McCarthy raved about Gilbert, saying in part: "It's incredible what he's done in his time here. You talk about a guy that has done everything and has taken advantage of every resource that's been available to him. I mean, in my mind he's already taken the second-year jump."

With Matthews sitting for the preseason opener, the 6-foot-3, 260-pound Gilbert was credited with two tackles and a quarterback hit against the Titans, and he generated the most pressure of any Packers rusher while playing the entire first half. Fackrell also started and was credited with a sack when he was in the vicinity as Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota scrambled out of bounds for no gain on the opening drive.

"We're all hungry. We're all working hard trying to make plays. I definitely feel like all of us have come a long way and are still improving," Gilbert said.

NOTES: After facing the Titans without 18 players who didn't suit up for the game, the Packers got back some of their injured guys on Sunday, including All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari (ankle); tight end Jimmy Graham (knee); wide receiver Randall Cobb (ankle); cornerbacks Kevin King (shoulder) and Jaire Alexander (groin); running back Aaron Jones (hamstring); and defensive linemen Mike Daniels (quad) and Muhammad Wilkerson (groin). Bakhtiari, King and Daniels only did individual drills and were held out of team periods. . Bakhtiari said the limited work was encouraging. "(We) just wanted to see the progression. Obviously they want to integrate me back in 鈥?don't want to just throw me in right away 鈥?but everything felt good."
